fiber cuts make me sad :~(

Concerning the cable break near Cleveland we have been informed that the cables have been intentionally sabotaged. The provider informed that they need to change the whole damaged fibre part and that is 3600 feet. Fibre has been ordered and ETA is 1900 UTC. Once the fibre arrives they need to blow it into the 3600 feet long duct before the splicing can start. It is 60 fibres that need to be spliced. The issue is escalated to our top management and also with the provider. As information I also provide this link: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/cle/ showing that the weather conditions in the Cleveland are impacting the time of solving this issue.

While I’ve heard of accidental cutting of fiber, I’ve never quite heard of an ISP being sabotaged intentionally.

Well, okay, maybe not to this level. After all, I did work for EarthLink for a while in the Broadband Support department, and I saw lots of “unintentional” sabotage from telco’s like BellSouth and SBC. Lines broken, taps placed that broke DSL connectivity, loops that didn’t terminate, all of it to get customers from us to them.

However, this Telia outage is really causing a pain in my ass, since Telia is one of my company’s main network providers, and explaining to your average webmaster the details and specifics of a fiber break isn’t all that easy.
