jabber ftw!

So, I decided to install a Jabber server on epiphany, and made it registerable.

Basically, you can install a jabber client of choice (I prefer Pidgin with the Off-The-Record plugin.

Just use jabber.atlgeek.com as your server and you can register accounts. Rad.

debian mail administration

There’s been some major changes over on epiphany lately.

First, I decided to upgrade to Apache 2.2 from the Debian repository. The conversion didn’t go smoothly, at least not at first, but I finally got it working how I want it to.

Sometime last week I’d borked up my Postfix configuration, to the point where the machine couldn’t send or receive mail. I didn’t know I’d done this until Mark sent me an instant message letting me know he couldn’t retrieve his password for Wordpress. I was in the middle of a busy shift at work, so I couldn’t take care of it, but I decided to upgrade my configuration, while I was at it, since I had email passwords stored in plain text, and that’s just not tickling the security conscious nerve inside my head.

I had originally followed this workaround from workaround.org, which is a great place to learn about Postfix. He hadn’t updated it with an Debian Etch walkthrough when I was setting up mail, so I had to hack in SpamAssassin and ClamAV support, rather than using AMaViS, since the Etch package for Amavis started doing the configuration directory structure, rather than having a single config file.

This time, I was really wanting to use PostfixAdmin, but there still aren’t any good walkthroughs for it, at least not as far as Debian is concerned, so I cast it to the wayside.

Lo and behold, there was a Postfix walkthrough for Debian Etch when I checked this week, using all of the fancy powers of MySQL 5.0 and the new Etch configuration structure. Granted, this time he used Dovecot rather than Courier, but I’m less attached to my POP/IMAP server than I am Postfix, so I rolled with it.

The walkthrough was exceedingly in depth. It explains step by step what you’re doing and why, and gives easier ways of implementing a mail system with a MySQL backend than the last walkthrough (not the least of which is making queries easier by creating MySQL Views for the email database, making it easy to pull domain and user information out with a simple query.

Once I’d gotten the test information working, I added a real domain and user, hoping that my old Maildirs were accessible, and they were! Happy day!

The only downside to the walkthrough is that there’s no web based administration utility (one is coming in September, according to the site… I can wait that long), but he does provide a command line python script to manage domains and users.

A five star walkthrough, and a must for anyone wanting to set up email on Debian.

ahh, finally…

The move to Apache 2.2 is finally done. All sites loading properly (fully tested this time), with a hand crafted installation of both PHP and ModSecurity. This moves me, at last, away from legacy software I copied from work’s default Debian install.

In other news, I bought a new digital camera last week. It’s a Canon Powershot A630. Picked it up at Sam’s Club for a bit more than Newegg had it for, but the special I wanted wasn’t available for some reason on payday, and after shipping, they were around the same price. Also picked up a 2gb SD card and a camera case, along with two sets of new 2500mAh rechargables for it. Now once I can pick up a better battery charger, I’ll be set.

I’ve taken a couple of snapshots around work while I was on break, you can see them at my Flickr page, or you can check out the photos page here on ATLgeek.com

Granted, I’ve also realized that I have no idea about photography, so I’ve joined the Atlanta and the Atlanta Photographer’s Guild groups so I can get together with some locals and learn how to take proper photos. Granted, they’re all using Digital SLRs for the most part, but they seem to have no bias against point-and-shoots, and they seem to be decent people.

is apache2 braindead?

or is it just me?

I tried upgrading epiphany to Apache 2, but for some reason, it kept defaulting to Alison’s Website when I tried accessing it by epiphany.unbeliever.net or the IP, even though I had the default virtualhost set up to feed from the epiphany’s document root.

blargh.

I’ll try it again tonight.

In other news, my company gave all the admins $25 mastercard gift cards for System Administrator Appreciation Day — yay for free moneyz.
